Nearly every property round here sits on Fenland ground. It’s flat and clay-heavy, and that makes a real difference to how paving holds up over the years. Older terrace in the town centre or South Lynn, or a newer estate out in Hardwick or North Lynn, it’s the same story: the surface only lasts if the base is right for the ground underneath.

A worn-out driveway can really make the whole front of a house look a bit tired. When we talk driveway paving, we’re talking about giving you a completely new surface. We dig out the old stuff, get the base ready properly, and then lay your chosen material from scratch. It’s the right move when the surface you’ve got now is simply too far gone for any patching up, or if there’s no proper hardstanding there at all.
Around King’s Lynn and the wider Fens, that flat, clay-heavy ground really does matter more than most folks realise. A driveway that’s put down without a thought for those local ground conditions is much more likely to shift over time or end up holding standing water (which is never a good look after a wet winter).
We make sure to set the sub-base depths to suit the actual ground beneath your property, not just some standard measurement pulled from a book. The base preparation, by the way, is absolutely critical here. The surface on top is only ever as good as what’s underneath, and it’s the bit most people overlook.

Not every damaged driveway needs ripping out completely, you know. Driveway repair focuses right on the problem area, those cracked blocks, a sunken patch, or some loose pavers, without having to lift and replace the whole surface. It’s a smaller job, naturally, and it saves you a fair bit on the cost of a full driveway paving project when the rest of the surface is still looking decent. We find a lot of people just want to get it sorted, not rebuilt.
After a proper Fens winter, frost damage is one of the main reasons driveways in King’s Lynn end up cracking. Porcelain paving is a man-made material. Every single slab comes out pretty much the same size, the same colour, and with a really consistent surface. That’s a big part of its appeal, you see, you get a nice clean, uniform finish that doesn’t change tone over time the way natural materials sometimes do.
It’s low-maintenance too. Porcelain resists most stains, it doesn’t soak up much water at all, and it cleans up easily, which is great for busy families. We lay porcelain for driveways, patios, and walkways. I’ve even built staircases and curved radius walls using porcelain, so we’re quite comfortable working with it beyond just flat surfaces. The lads are good with it.
The main difference between porcelain paving and natural stone paving really comes down to character. Porcelain gives you that uniform, easy-care look. Natural stone, because it’s quarried, means every piece is a bit different. One isn’t necessarily better than the other, it really depends on what you want your driveway or patio to look like and how much upkeep you’re happy doing.
People often reckon every paving material wears the same over the years. They come up differently. Porcelain weathers on its own timeline, and the jointing and base it needs vary from stone as well. I’ll take you through all that on site, so you go in knowing what each one asks of you.
Every piece of natural stone paving is truly one of a kind. It’s dug out of the ground, not made in a factory, so you get all that lovely natural variation in colour, texture, and surface finish. That’s what draws most people to it, especially for older properties or established gardens where a completely uniform, manufactured look just wouldn’t feel quite right. Stone just blends in.

It looks like it’s always been there.

What suits you comes down to your place and what you want to see when you pull onto the drive of a morning. On the bigger jobs we work to stage payments. Each stage gets signed off by building control before you pay for it, so your money only ever follows work that’s done and passed. Takes the worry out of it.
Paver installation, that’s the technique, not the project itself. It’s the actual laying work that sits behind every driveway paving and patio paving job we do. We’re talking about the base preparation, getting the laying pattern right, doing all the cutting, and then the jointing. So, driveway paving and patio paving are the end results. Paver installation is simply how we get them done properly, making sure they last.
Getting the base preparation right really matters more on the Fens’ low-lying ground. Poor work underneath the surface almost always leads to movement over time, blocks sink, joints open up, and you end up with puddles or trip hazards, which no one wants. We compact the sub-base in layers, set the correct falls for drainage, and bed the pavers so they stay where they’re put. That’s the key to a good, lasting surface. We’ve noticed this really counts around places like Walpole and Marshland St James.
The paperwork side of things matters more than people often expect with this type of work. If you’re putting down hardstanding in your front garden that’s over a certain size, you’ll usually need permeable paving or proper drainage to avoid needing planning permission. We’ll certainly flag that up on the site visit if it looks like it applies to your property. It saves a lot of headaches later on.
So, when you’re looking at a driveway or patio quote, the paver installation method is really what separates a surface that’s going to last from one that’s likely to shift after just a couple of winters. It’s the bit you can’t see once the job’s done, but it’s the bit that counts the most. We do our best to make it right.
A path from the driveway to your front door, or a walkway winding through the garden, walkway paving is a smaller job than a full driveway, but it still needs doing properly. It’s not something you just throw down. We usually lay walkway paving to match an existing driveway or patio surface, so everything ties together nicely.
Most walkway paving jobs tend to come in alongside a bigger driveway paving or patio paving project, rather than on their own. If you’re already having the driveway done, it makes good sense to run a matching path up to the door at the same time. But we do standalone walkway paving too, things like garden paths, side-access paths, that sort of thing.
The same base preparation rules apply here as on the bigger surfaces. A walkway laid on thin, uncompacted ground will move and go uneven, so we dig out, lay a proper base, and set the pavers level. It’s a proper job even on a small run.
